Providence, R.I. - Senior David Carpentier (Faribault, Minn.) recorded one goal and one assist, while freshman goalie Tyler Sims (Forth Worth, Texas) stopped 36 shots to lead the Providence College men's hockey team to a 4-1 victory over Wayne State on Saturday, November 6 at Schneider Arena.
The Friars, who led, 2-1, going into the third period, scored an insurance goal with less than nine minutes remaining as Carpentier was able to tap in his first goal of the season after a strong rush by sophomore Chase Watson (Media, Pa.). Senior captain Jeff Mason (Easthampton, Mass.) also assisted on the goal.
PC senior assistant captain Chris Chaput (Pawtucket, R.I.) scored the game-winning goal on the power play in the second period. Chaput's wrist shot from the slot beat Wayne State goalie Will Hooper at 3:22 as the Friars jumped to a 2-0 lead. The Warriors responded with a power-play goal of their own as time expired in the second period. Mark Nebus was able to deflect a shot from the point passed Sims to make the score, 2-1.
Sims made the most of his collegiate debut as he thwarted 29 WSU shots in the final two periods. At the 18:30 mark of the first period, Sims stopped John May's breakaway attempt to keep the Friars ahead, 1-0. Wayne State out shot the Friars, 37-27, including 19-8 in the final period.
The Friars also received a big boost from senior defenseman Eric Lundberg (Vernon, Conn.), who opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 2:32 of the opening. For Lundberg, it marked his first collegiate goal. The Friars went two-for-five on the power play, while the Warriors one of six chances to the power play.
