Providence, R.I. - The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated by Wayne State, 4-2, on Saturday, November 5 in a non-conference game at Schneider Arena.
Providence (3-3) took a 1-0 lead with 58 seconds left in the first period as sophomore Tony Zancanaro (Trenton, Mich.) pounced on a loose puck in front of the net for his first goal of the season. Juniors Torry Gajda (Westfield, Mass.) and Nate Meyers (Maple Glen, Pa.) assisted on the goal.
In the second period, Wayne State (5-2) tied the game at 1-1. While on a five-on-three power play, sophomore Jason Bloomingburg fired a one timer from the slot past PC netminder David Cacciola (Burlington, Mass.) at 6:03. The Friars battled back and scored another late goal tie the game, 2-2. Senior captain Jeff Mason (Easthampton, Mass.) fired a shot from the blue line that was saved by Wayne State netminder Matt Kelly, however, Meyers tucked the puck into the open net for his first goal of the season at 17:43. The Warriors out shot the Friars, 18-3, in the second period.
The game-winning goal came at 5:19 of the third period as John May scored from in close after a nifty pass from Stavros Paskaris. The Warriors added an insurance goal with less than eight minutes remaining as Adam Krug took advantage of a PC turnover in its own end and unleashed a high slap shot over Cacciola's glove side.
Cacciola made 32 saves including several point-blank stops, while Kelly made 20 saves to earn his third win of the season.
Providence and Wayne State will play each other again on Saturday, November 6 at Schneider Arena.
