PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's ice hockey team (5-6-1) rolled over Holy Cross (3-5-3) by the score of 3-1 in semifinal action of the second annual Dunkin' Donuts Coffee Pot Tournament held this evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. PC will take on Merrimack who also advanced to the championship game as they knocked off Union, 2-1, in a shootout, following a 4-4 tie. The Championship game is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday evening in the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
The Friars got on the board first as junior forward Torry Gajda (Westfield, Mass.) netted his second goal of the season. It was assisted by seniors Eric Lundberg (Vernon, Conn.), and Chris Chaput (Pawtucket, R.I.), 9:03 into the first period.
Providence would later add a pair of goals about two minutes apart in the second frame. Sophomore forward Jamie Carroll (Andover, Conn.) collected his third score of the season with a power play goal on a feed from classmate Bryan Horan (Farmington, Conn.) and freshman goaltender Tyler Sims (Fort Worth, Texas.). For Sims, it was the first point of his collegiate career. He also made a game-high 26 saves in net for the Friars.
Soon after, PC freshman Jon Rheault (Deering, N.H.) scored his fourth goal of the year. It came 7:38 into the second period, and made it 3-0, Friars. He was assisted by Chaput and Gajda.
In the third and final period, Holy Cross would spoil Sims' shutout bid. With 2:17 left in the contest as freshman Cal St. Denis (Freelton, Ont.) scored his first collegiate goal.
With the victory, Providence advanced to face Merrimack in the championship game of the Dunkin' Donuts Coffee Pot Tournament. That contest will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Loser Holy Cross will take on Union in the consolation game that is slated to start at 4:00 p.m.
Earlier today, Merrimack tied Union, 4-4. The Warriors advanced to the championship game of the Coffee Pot Tournament, by winning the concluding shootout, 2-1. Junior Brian Schmidt (Bloomington, Minn.) came through with the game-winner to break a 1-1 shootout tie. Trailing 4-1 midway through the second period, Merrimack scored three unanswered goals to tie it 4-4, early in the third, and would go on to win via a shootout.
