PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Playing their third game in five days the Providence College Friars improved to 3-0 on the season with a 79-48 win over St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday, November 20 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I.
St. Thomas, a Division II team from Sparkhill, N.Y., hung tough against the Friars for the first 15 minutes of the game as they trailed by only four points (23-19) with 5:34 remaining in the first half. However, sophomore Gerald Brown (Baltimore, N.Y.) scored six points in the final five minutes of play of the first half as the Friars went on an 11-4 run and ended the half with a 34-23 lead.
The Friars dominated the final 20 minutes of play, outscoring St. Thomas, 45-25. Providence senior Ryan Gomes (Waterbury, Conn.) led all scorers with 16 points. He also added five rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Dwight Brewington (Lynn, Mass.) was 5-8 from the field and finished with 14 points. Brown also scored in double figures as he registered career-highs in points (15) and rebounds (six).
The Friars return to action on Wednesday, November 24 versus Wake Forest in the semifinals of the Preseason NIT at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN 2 at Madison Square Garden in New York
