PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- It was announced on November 1 that Providence College senior forward Ryan Gomes (Waterbury, Conn.) was named to the Rivals.com Preseason All-America First Team. He was the only player from the BIG EAST selected to the First Team. Gomes joined Chris Paul of Wake Forest, Julius Hodge of N.C. State, Wayne Simien of Kansas, and Ike Diogu of Arizona State on the First Team. Gomes earned nine All-America honors last season.
Gomes, who last week was named BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year and named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST First Team, also has been named one of the Top-50 Preseason Candidates for the 2004-05 Wooden Award and the Wooden All-America Team.
The 6-7, 240-pound forward averaged 18.9 points and 9.4 rebounds per game last season. He was the first Friar to earn Associated Press First Team All-America honors since Marvin Barnes received the accolades in 1974. Gomes led the Friars to a 20-9 mark and a third-place finish in the BIG EAST. He also posted 13 double-doubles and scored 20 or more points 14 times, including nine games in which he registered 25 or more points. He ranked in the top five in the BIG EAST in field goal percentage (50.7), rebounds (9.4 rpg), scoring (18.9 ppg), and free throw percentage (87.0). Gomes, a four-time BIG EAST Player of the Week honoree last season, was one of only two players to be named a unanimous selection for the 2004 All-BIG EAST First Team. In addition to their third place finish in the league, Gomes brought the Friars to new heights last season as they earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament and reached No. 12 in the Associated Press rankings.
Gomes and Friars will tip off the 2004-05 season on November 6 against EA Sports All-Stars at 7:30 p.m. at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
