VILLANOVA UNIVERSITY (9-6, 2-2 BIG EAST): Villanova enters Sunday's BIG EAST field hockey game against Providence with a 9-6 overall record and a 2-2 mark in the BIG EAST. The Wildcats have been defeated in three of their last four games, including two-straight losses leading up to their game with the Friars. Megan Foster leads Villanova in scoring with 37 points on 16 goals and five assists. Lauren Campanelli is second among her teammates in scoring with 26 points (nine goals, eight assists), while Rory Rogers ranks third with 21 points (nine goals, three assists). Eight other Wildcats have scored at least one point this season through 15 games. Erin Scott is the primary goalkeeper for Villanova. She has played 1039 minutes in the cage and has posted three shutouts, a 1.95 goals against average and a 0.807 save percentage. The Friars lead the all-time series against Villanova with an 11-8-2 overall record, however, Villanova has defeated Providence in each of the last five meetings. PC's last win over Villanova was during the 1998 season, when the Friars earned a 4-3 overtime victory in Providence, R.I.
PROVIDENCE COLLEGE (9-9, 0-3 BIG EAST): The Providence College field hockey team enters Sunday's game against Villanova with a 9-9 overall record and an 0-3 mark in the BIG EAST. After starting the season with three-consecutive losses, the Friars have won nine of their last 15 games, including five of their last seven. PC's nine wins in 2004 mark the most victories for the program since 2001, when the Friars finished, 11-8. Sophomore Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.) leads Providence in scoring with 33 points on nine goals and 15 assists. In games played through October 20, McGow leads the BIG EAST Conference, and is tied for second in the nation among all NCAA Division I field hockey players with 15 assists. Johanna Bischof (Duke) currently leads the nation in assists with 17. McGow is tied with Kelly Grant (Duke) and Kelly Dostal (Wake Forest). In just her second season with the Friars, McGow also has moved into a tie for 17th place on PC's all-time career scoring list with 53 points (18 goals, 17 assists). She ranks 13th all-time in career assists (17) and 18th all-time in career goals (18). She became the first player since 1999 to reach the 30-point plateau in a single-season. McGow became the 19th player all-time at Providence to score 50 or more career points. Through 18 games, McGow also leads the Friars with four defensive saves.
Junior Kati Lary (Canaan, N.H.) is second on the team in scoring with 22 points (eight goals, six assists) and senior Amy Phillips (Worcester, Mass.) ranks third among her teammates with 19 points (nine goals, one assist). Both players have cracked the top-25 in career scoring at Providence. Lary ranks 21st all-time with 46 career points on 16 goals and 14 assists, while Phillips sits at 22nd all-time with 44 career points on 20 goals and four assists. Lary is tied for 20th all-time in career goals (16) and tied for 16th all-time in career assists (14). Phillips is tied for 15th all-time in career goals with 20. Only 16 players in Providence College field hockey history have scored 20-or more goals in their careers with the Friars.
Sophomore Lauren Sickel (Plaistow, N.H.) and freshman Abby Maguire (Southbury, Conn.) each have reached double-digits in overall scoring this season. Sickel has 12 points on five goals and two assists, while Maguire has 11 points on five goals and one assist.
Senior goalkeeper Meredith Jones (Lake Forest, Ill.) has played every minute in the cage this season for the Friars. She has collected 130 saves and one shutout victory on the year. Through 18 games, she has a 2.74 goals against average and a 0.722 save percentage.
