PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Syracuse, 55-50, in BIG EAST Conference action on Saturday, January 17 in Providence, R.I. Freshman Jill Furstenburg (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) netted a career-high 16 points and dished out a game-high five assists in the Friar effort. Senior Kristin Quinn (Sewell, N.J.) and junior Gayle Nwafili (Maplewood, N.J.) added 10 points each for PC, who falls to 4-11 overall and 0-4 in the BIG EAST.

In the first half, Furstenburg netted 14 of the Friars' 24 points and PC trailed Syracuse by 10-points at the half (34-24). Nwafili and freshman guard Janell Fabor (Clifton, N.J.) contributed six points each to round out the Providence scoring effort in the opening session. The Orangewomen led by as many as 15 in the half (26-11) with 5:57 remaining on the clock. The Friars cut the deficit to eight (26-18) on a 7-0 run with 4:22 left in the half, but a 5-0 Syracuse run pushed the Orangewomen lead back to 13 (31-18) at the 2:57 mark. Providence finished out the half with a 5-3 scoring advantage and trailed by 10 points at the break (34-24). Chineze Nwagbo led Syracuse with 14 points and eight rebounds in the first half.

Providence started the second half of play on a 6-0 run to cut Syracuse's lead to four points (34-30) over the first 1:47 of action. The Orangewomen halted the run on a three-point bucket from Lauren Kohn at the 17:45 mark which started a 6-0 run by Syracuse to lead by 10 points (40-30) with 15:24 on the clock. Syracuse owned its largest lead of the second half (13 points) with 10:07 left to play as Kohn hit her fifth three-pointer of the game to make the score 47-34. At that point, Providence began to chip away at the 'Cuse lead and trailed by just three-points (49-46) with 3:47 remaining in the game. Providence connected on just two-of-eight field goals and was 0-4 from the foul line over the last 2:54.

Providence College (4-11, 0-4 BIG EAST) will host 21st-ranked Miami (Fla.) in BIG EAST Conference action on Tuesday, January 20 at 7:30 p.m. The game will be played at PC's Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I.
