WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Providence College volleyball team (0-2) was defeated by Hartford, 3-1 (27-30, 30-18, 30-19, 30-23), and Portland State, 3-0 (30-17, 30-12, 30-17), in the first day of competition at the West Point Tournament hosted by the United States Military Academy.
Junior Ayana Cadres (Los Angeles, Calif.) powered the Friar offense in the Hartford match, registering 13 kills on 35 total attacks for a .229 hitting percentage. Classmate Jennifer Backes (Seaford, N.Y.) led the defense with 16 digs.
Against Portland State, sophomore Katie Fleming (Cary, N.C.) notched six kills and nine digs for the Friars.
Providence takes to the court again in their final match at West Point, against host Army, at noon on Saturday, August 30.
