2003 BIG EAST Outdoor Track Preview -
The Friar men's track team will compete at the 2003 BIG EAST Outdoor Track Championship on May 3-4 in Storrs, Conn.
Senior All-American Adam Sutton (Preston, England), who will be running the 5,000 or 10,000 meters at the BIG EAST Championship, has been the Friars' top runner this spring. He has qualified for the NCAA Regional Championship in the 5,000 meters (14:10.29). Sutton qualified in the 5,000 by finishing third the Raleigh Relays on March 29. Sutton, who finished third in the 2002 BIG EAST Outdoor 5,000 meters, captured his second All-America honor in cross country during the fall as he placed 27th at the NCAA Championship.
Graduate student Paul Reilly (Loughrea, Ireland) also has qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships in the 5,000 meters. Reilly finished 11th in a time of 14:08.92 at the Penn Relays on April 24. Last year, Reilly placed fifth in the 5,000 (14:29.80) at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championship. Senior Tyler McCabe (Mystic, Conn.) and sophomore Pat Moulton (Pelham, N.H.) each could run the 5,000 meters. McCabe and Moulton both ran strong 5,000 meter races at the Penn Relays. McCabe finished 19th (14:17.58) and Moulton placed 25th (14:21.00) as they both qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships.
Sophomore Liam Reale (Hospital, Ireland) qualified for the NCAA Regional Championship with a time of 1:49.89 as he captured the 800 meters at the Brown Invitational on April 12. Reale will run the 800 or the 1,500 meters at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championship.
Sophomore Dylan Wykes (Kingston, Ontario) will run the 1,500 meters. Wykes qualified for the BIG EAST Championship by running the mile in a time of 4:08.89 at the New England Indoor Championships.
Sophomore Pat Guidera (Clonmel, Ireland) and junior Jamie Carmichael (Windsor, Vt.) each will compete in the steeplechase. In 2002, Guidera placed eighth in the steeplechase at the BIG EAST Championship in a time of 9:12.24. He placed second in the steeplechase on April 12 at the Brown Invitational in a time of 9:07.85 and qualified for the NCAA Regional Championship. Carmichael qualified for the BIG EAST Championship by placing eighth in the steeplechase at the Penn Relays in a time of 9:13.11.
