STORRS, Conn. - Ryan Gomes scored 26 points and Marcus Douthit had a career-high nine blocks to lead Providence to a 76-70 win over Connecticut on Wednesday.
The Friars (14-12, 7-8 Big East) avenged last month's 16-point loss to Connecticut in Providence. The victory also ended UConn's bid for a top seed in next week's Big East tournament and spoiled senior night for the Huskies in their home finale.
The Huskies (18-8, 9-6) can still earn a first-round bye in the tournament if they win Saturday at Boston College, which clinched the top seed in the East Division.
Gomes also finished with a team-high three steals and four assists. Tukka Kotti finished with 13 points for PC, including a key 3-pointer in the closing minutes to keep the Huskies at bay.
Emeka Okafor had 24 points and 15 boards for the Huskies and Ben Gordon added 21.
UConn could not slow Gomes and his inside game. The 6-foot-7 forward scored often and early over Okafor in the first half. Gomes scored 16 in the period, hitting four of PC's first six field goals.
The Friars twice led by as many as 11 in the first half, both times on Gomes' baskets. His last jumper of the half with 2:46 left gave Providence a 34-23 lead.
But UConn countered with the final nine points of the period that included two field goals by Okafor and a 3-pointer from Gordon to cut the lead to 34-32 at the break.
UConn grabbed the lead briefly early in the second half. Denham Brown converted a 3-point play with 17 minutes left to give the Huskies a 38-36 lead, their last of the game. PC regained the lead for good 30 seconds later on Donnie McGrath's 3-pointer, which kicked off a 10-2 run.
The Huskies closed to within two at 57-55 on a slam by Okafor, but quick buckets by Douthit and Kotti kept PC in control.
UConn controlled the boards 49-34, but stumbled with 17 turnovers. PC converted 17 points off the miscues.
