The No. 9 Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated the University of Connecticut, 2-1, on Saturday, February 8 at the UCONN Ice Arena.
The Friars got on the board 7:12 into the first period when senior Jenn Butsch scored high to the glove-side on the Huskies goaltender Kaitlyn Shain. The Huskies were able to capitalize on one of three powerplay chances in the second as Jacquelyn McGuire poked home a rebound in front of Providence freshman goaltender Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) at the 12:53 mark of the period. Less than three minutes later junior Kelli Halcisak (Grosse Ile, Mich.) scored on a slapshot from the point. The assists were awarded to junior Darlene Stephenson (Virden, Manitoba) and Butsch. This assist marked the 100th career point for Butsch making her the 23rd women in Providence College history to reach the century mark. Connecticut had several chances in the third, including an extra skater for the last 20 seconds, but were unable to score.
Providence outshot Connecticut, 38-21. Bugden made 20 saves as the Friars moved to 16-6-6 overall on the year and 11-1-1 in HOCKEY EAST, while Connecticut fell to 9-16-4 overall and 1-6-3 in HOCKEY EAST.
