The No. 9 Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated Quinnipiac University, 4-1, on Friday, February 14 at the Northford Ice Pavilion.
The Friars got on the board with 4:56 remaining in the first period. Senior Danielle Culgin (Framingham, Mass.) carried the puck into the zone and passed the puck across the crease to junior Darlene Stephenson (Virden, Manitoba) who fired the puck top-shelf glove-side on the Bobcats' goaltender Mel Courtemanche. Quinnipiac tied the game with 10:05 left in the third period when Candace Boyles scored for the Bobcats. Sophomore Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) gave the Friars the lead for good less than two minutes later as she received a pass from Stephenson and beat the goaltender under the crossbar to her stick-side. Just 29 seconds later, Culgin scored unassisted on the power-play. Providence put the finishing touch on the game with 2:50 remaining in the game as Zimmerman and sophomore Ashley Payton (Chesterfield, Mo.) made consecutive cross-ice passes to spring junior Kelli Halcisak (Grosse Ile, Mich.) as she split the defense and deposited the puck in the net on her backhand.
Providence outshot Quinnipiac, 54-8. Sophomore Amy Thomas (Austin, Texas) made seven saves on eight shots as the Friars moved to 18-6-6 overall on the year, while Quinnipiac fell to 5-21-0 overall.
