No. 9 Women's Ice Hockey Defeats Brown, 4-3

The No. 9 Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated Brown, 4-3, on Wednesday, February 12 at Schneider Arena.

The Friars defeated their cross-town rival Brown for the first time since January 23, 1998 when the score was 2-0. The teams were tied at the end of the first period, 1-1, and at the end of the second period, 3-3. Brown got their goals from Katie Lafleur, Cassie Turner and Kim Insalaco. Insalaco also had two assists and earned the second star of the game. Three of the Friars goals came from a potent power-play that was able to capitalize on three of their seven chances. Senior Danielle Culgin (Framingham, Mass.), sophomore Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) and junior Darlene Stephenson (Virden, Manitoba) each scored with the man-advantage. Stephenson who scored an even-strength goal early in the second period also notched her second game-winning goal of the season in the third period. Five Friars assisted on the four goals with juniors Meredith Roth (Dubuque, Iowa) and Kelli Halcisak (Grosse Ile, Mich.) each picking up two. Seniors Jenn Butsch (Berlin, Vt.) and Culgin each added one assist as did sophomore Emily Gryp (Lexington, Mass.).

Providence was outshot by Brown, 36-34. Providence's freshman goaltender Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) made 33 saves as the Friars climbed to 17-6-6 on the season, while Brown fell to 9-10-4.

No. 9 Providence College returns to action on Friday, February 14 when they travel to Hamden, Conn. to take on Quinnipiac at 7:00 p.m.
