BOSTON (AP) - Rob Sanders scored 18 points, leading four Providence players in double figures, as the Friars survived a second half rally by Alabama to nip the Crimson Tide 76-71 Saturday.
Alabama's Emmett Thomas led all scores with 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including 5 of 6 3-pointers.
Alabama rallied from a 22-point deficit in the second half behind the shooting of Thomas and Earnest Shelton. It was Antoine Pettway's 3-pointer with 54 seconds left that cut the Friar lead to 71-69. Tuukka Kotti responded with a driving layup for Providence with 35 seconds left to put the Friars ahead 73-69. Two blocks, one each by Marcus Douthit and Kotti, helped preserve the Friars' victory in the final minutes.
The Friars shot out to a 50-30 halftime lead with torrid shooting. Sanders and Sheiku Kabba both hit three 3-pointers for Providence as the Friars shot 56 percent in the first half compared to Alabama's 39 percent. Providence also scored 21 points off 11 Alabama turnovers while making 6 of 9 shots from 3-point range.
Alabama shot 51 percent in the second half, compared to only 30 percent for the Friars.
