The Providence College field hockey team hosts in-state rival Rhode Island in non-conference action on Wednesday, October 8 in Providence, R.I. The Friars enter Wednesday's game with a 7-5 overall record, while the Rams of URI come to PC with a 4-7 overall mark.
The Friars and Rams have met 26 times in the 27-year history of the Providence College field hockey program. Providence leads the all-time series in games played against URI with a record of 17-7-2. The Friars have earned victories in four of the last five games against URI, including wins over the Rams in each of the last two meetings. Last season, Providence earned a 2-1 victory over URI in Kingston, R.I. on September 4. The last time the Rams defeated Providence was during the 2000 season as URI managed to come away with a 4-3 overtime win in Kingston, R.I.
Providence is led offensively by sophomore Katharine Lary (Canaan, N.H.). Lary owns a team-high 24 points on eight goals and eight assists. Freshman Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.) is second on the team in scoring with 20 points on nine goals and two assists. Junior Amy Phillips (Worcester, Mass.) is third in scoring with 14 points (six goals, two assists), while senior Stefanie Suehnholz (Flemington, N.J.) has 13 points on five goals and three assists. Senior Meaghan Moran (Framingham, Mass.) has played 795 minutes in goal for the Friars this season. She has a .777 save percentage and a 2.38 goals against average. Moran has posted 94 saves and one shutout, while allowing 27 goals. Moran needs just two more saves to equal her single-season career high in saves (96).
A Providence win this afternoon would give the Friars a total of eight wins on the year, equaling the Friars' win total a year ago as the Friars finished the year with an 8-12 record. The Friars have seven games left on the 2003 schedule, including this afternoon's match-up with the Rams.
Rhode Island (4-7 overall) is led by Kelly Johnson's 10 points on three goals and four assists. Heather Scherick and Kylie LaChapelle each have nine points on four goals and one assist. Johnson and Scherick have combined to attempt 48 of the Rams 101 shots this season. Jennifer Perry has played 806 minutes in goal for URI and has a .808 save percentage and a 1.74 goals against average.
