PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team earned a 4-0 shutout victory over Sacred Heart in non-conference action on Friday, October 3 in Providence, R.I. Freshman forward Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.) led the Friars with two goals in the victory. Providence improves to 7-4 overall on the season, while the Pioneers' record falls to 5-7 overall.

Sophomore forward Katharine Lary (Canaan, N.H.) started the scoring for the Friars at the 10:51 mark of the first half on a penalty corner. She scored off of a pass from Stefanie Suehnholz (Flemington, N.J.) who fed Lary from the top of the circle. McGow netted her first goal of the afternoon with 5:44 remaining in the first half to make the score 2-0. Junior forward Amy Phillips (Worcester, Mass.) was credited with the assist.

In the second half, McGow put the Friars up, 3-0, as she received a ball inside the circle with 10:12 remaining in the game. The Pioneer's goaltender went down to make an attempt at a save, but McGow slipped the ball passed her for her second goal of the afternoon, unassisted. Freshman Jessica Weinstein (Bridgeton, N.J.) scored the Friars' fourth and final goal of the day on a penalty corner with 3:17 remaining on the clock. Phillips earned her second assist of the afternoon as she fed Weinstein from the top of the circle. It marked the first goal of Weinstein's collegiate career.

Senior Meaghan Moran (Framingham, Mass.) registered her first shutout of the season with four saves. Moran now has a total of 8.5 shutouts in her career at Providence. The Friars outshot the Pioneers, 15-8. Sacred Heart held the advantage in penalty corners, 10-5.

Providence (7-4) returns to action (tomorrow) on Saturday, October 4. The Friars travel to Cambridge, Mass. to take on Harvard in non-conference action at 1:00 p.m.
