Men's and Women's Track Shine at Terrier Classic

BOSTON, Mass. -- The Providence College men's and women's indoor track teams had a strong showing at the Boston University Terrier Classic on Saturday, January 25.

On the women's side, senior All-American Roisin McGettigan (Wicklow, Ireland) registered the fastest time in the mile by an NCAA athlete this season as she crossed the finish line in a time of 4:37.95. Sophomore Deirdre Byrne (Avoca, Ireland) also was impressive in the mile, finishing in 4:40.47, which is the third best in the country. With their strong performances in the mile at the Terrier Classic, McGettigan and Byrne automatically qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track Championship, which will be held on March 14-15 in Fayetteville, Ark.

In the 5,000-meter run, sophomore Mary Cullen (Sligo, Ireland) and graduate student Heather Cappello (Lockport, N.Y.) were the top two collegiate finishers at the Terrier Classic. Cullen finished in a time of 16:34.22 and Cappello recorded a time of 16:34.86. Cullen and Cappello were NCAA provisional qualifiers and they also qualified for the IC4As. Also qualifying for the IC4A's, was junior Lisa Cappello (Lockport, N.Y.) who recorded a time 17:24.65 in the 5,000-meter run at the Terrier Classic and freshman Fiona Crombie (Christchurch, New Zealand), who finished the 3,000-meter run in a time of 9:44.53. Senior Emer O'Shea (Limerick, Ireland) led the Friars in the 1,000 meters, finishing first in a time of 2:52.68.

On the men's side, sophomore Liam Reale (Hospital, Ireland) captured the mile at the Terrier Classic in a time of 4:04.96, which qualified him for the IC4A's. In the 3,000-meter run, sophomore Dylan Wykes (Kingston, Ont.) recorded a time of 8:07.80 and provisionally qualified for the NCAA's. Graduate student Paul Reilly (Loughrea, Ireland) recorded a time of 8:12.27 in the 3,000 meters and qualified for the IC4A's. Sophomore Patrick Moulton (Pelham, N.H.) and senior Tyler McCabe (Mystic, Conn.) also qualified for the IC4A's in the 5,000-meter run. Moulton finished the race in a time of 14:26 and McCabe recorded a time of 14:26.30.

The Friars will return to action on February 7 at Boston University.
