The No. 9 Providence College women's ice hockey team tied the Yale University Bulldogs, 1-1, on Sunday, January 19 at Ingalls Rink.
The Friars got on the board late in the first period, when senior Jenn Butsch (Berlin, Vt.) walked the puck out of the corner and beat the Yale goaltender with only 58 seconds left on the clock. Junior Darlene Stephenson (Virden, Manitoba) and sophomore Danielle Bourgette (Anaheim, Calif.) both assisted on the goal. Yale evened the score 1:20 into the second period when Natalie Babony intercepted a pass at the blueline and skated in alone on freshman goaltender Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) and put the puck in the net. The Friars had several chances in the third period and overtime but were unable to capitalize as freshman goaltender Sarah Love won the game for the Bulldogs making 35 saves.
Providence outshot Yale, 36-21. Bugden made 20 saves as the Friars moved to 11-5-6 on the year, while Yale moved to 4-12-2.
No. 9 Providence College returns to action on Saturday and Sunday, January 25-26 as they play a home-and-home with Northeastern.
