The No. 7 Providence College women's ice hockey team tied Niagara, 2-2, on Saturday, January 11 for the second day in a row at Schneider Arena.
Providence got the first goal of the game at the 9:05 mark of the first period when sophomore Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) scored, with fellow sophomores Danielle Bourgette (Anaheim, Calif.) and Emily Gryp (Lexington, Mass.) picking up the assists. Lindsay Vine tied the game for Niagara with four minutes left in the first when she scored on the power-play with assists going to Linda Groff and Jennifer Goulet. The Purple Eagles struck again in the first when Katie Sweeney scored with just 2:19 left in the period. Zimmerman scored her second goal of the day with 15:26 left in the second period. Zimmerman jammed the puck under Niagara goalie Jennifer Mascaro after she made a save on shots from sophomore Ashley Payton (Chesterfield, Mo.) and senior Melanie Ruzzi (Burnsville, Minn.).
Providence outshot Niagara, 45-32. Freshman goaltender Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) made 30 saves , moved her record to 8-4-4 on the year, and helped the Friars move to 10-5-5 overall. Mascaro made 43 saves as the Purple Eagles moved to 10-9-3 overall.
No. 7 Providence College returns to action on Saturday, January 18 when they host Boston College at Schneider Arena at 2:00 p.m.
