LORETTO, Pa. - The Providence volleyball team played host St. Francis (Pa.) to five matches before falling, 3-2, in its first match of the day at DeGol Arena in Loretto, Pa. The Friars fell to Iona, 3-1, in the latter match and closed the St. Francis Invitational 1-3.
The Friars were defeated by the Red Flash 17-30, 30-26, 30-28, 24-30, and 11-15. Sophomore Ayana Cadres (Los Angeles, Calif.) led the Friars with a match-high 21 kills. Freshman Katie Fleming (Cary, N.C.), the Friars' lone All-Tournament Team selection, tallied 19 kills and eight digs while senior Sandy Fanning (E. Amherst, N.Y.) had 13 digs and 14 kills.
The Gaels bested the Friars in four games: 20-30, 30-28, 22-30, 28-30. Fleming tied for a match-high 17 digs and added 15 kills. Cadres notched 10 kills and six digs for Providence.
The Friars (2-13) will open their conference schedule against Virginia Tech on Saturday, September 28 at 2:00 p.m. in Mullaney Gymnasium.
