PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Despite taking a late 28-27 lead over Virginia Tech in the third game, Providence found itself unable to force a fourth frame and fell, 30-28, giving Virginia Tech a 3-0 win in BIG EAST volleyball action at Mullaney Gymnasium on September 28 in Providence, R.I.
With the loss in their conference opener, the Friars stand at 2-14 overall and 0-1 in the BIG EAST. Virginia Tech improves to 8-7 overall, 1-0 BIG EAST.
Sophomore Ayana Cadres (Los Angeles, Calif.) led the Friars on offense with nine kills on 25 total attempts. Senior Sandy Fanning (E. Amherst, N.Y.) had a team-high 11 digs while freshman Katie Fleming (Cary, N.C.) added 10 digs for the Friar defense.
Virginia Tech's Annie Spicer notched a match-high 13 kills. Teammate Ashley Bayer led the Hokie defense with 12 digs.
The Friars return to action on Sunday, September 29 at 2:00 p.m. in Mullaney Gym for a conference match with the Miami Hurricanes.
