PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College women's soccer team defeated the University of Maine, 1-0, on Friday, September 13 at Providence's Glay Field.
Both teams battled to a scoreless tie at halftime, and it was not until the 78th minute that Providence midfielder Shannon McMorrow (Boca Raton, Fla.) scored on an assist from midfielder BriAnne Bruni (Bristol, Conn.). The Friars then held off a physical Black Bears team for the next 12 minutes to complete the victory.
The Friars outshot the Black Bears, 11-8. Forward Kerry O'Malley (Longmeadow, Mass.) had four of Providence's shots and goalkeeper Caroline Haines (Stillwater, Minn.) made four saves on four shots on goal for the shutout.
With the win Providence improved to 2-1-2, while Maine fell to 2-2-0 on the season. Providence's next match is on Sunday, September 15 at Marist College.
