The Providence College women's soccer team defeated Brown University, 2-0, on Wednesday, September 25 in Providence, R.I.
The Friars, who have not beaten the Bears since 1993, gave Coach Tracy Kerr her first victory in the cross-town rivalry. Freshman Kerry O'Malley (Longmeadow, Mass.) scored her second goal of the season which proved to be the game winner in the 34th minute of the game. The second goal of the game came off of a set play from about 10 yards outside of the box. Sophomore Maura Robertson (Wellesley, Mass.) connected on a cross with fellow sophomore Lauren Ritchie (Sayville, N.Y.) who headed the ball on to the foot of senior Kyle McAuley (Trumbull, Conn.) who slipped the ball past keeper Sarah Gervais. As the game progressed the Friars defense withstood a strong attack from the Bears who were unable to convert on any of their chances.
Providence was outshot by Brown, 17-11. Freshman goalkeeper Caitlin Pickul (North Andover, Mass.), playing in her second consecutive game, turned in another strong performance making five saves at critical points in the game.
With the win Providence improved to 4-3-2, while Brown fell to 3-2-2 on the season. Providence's next match is on Sunday, September 29 at Boston College.
