PORTSMOUTH, R.I. -- The Providence College men's golf team finished 16th of 18 teams at the URI Spring Invitational at the Green Valley Country Club in Portsmouth, R.I., on April 26-27. Providence, playing in its final match, shot a two-day, two-round total of 669 (342-327). The URI Spring Invitational was won by the University of Rhode Island with a score of 609 (312-297) on the 6,850 yard, par-71 course.
The Friars were led by freshman Jonathan Pirie (East Greenwich, R.I.) who finished tied for 46th with a score of 163 (80-83) and senior Chris Tobey (Hopkinton, Mass.) who finished tied for 58th with a score of 166 (88-78). PC's other golfers were freshman Steve Woelfel of Norwood, Mass. (tied 69th, 87-82--169), freshman Kevin McGrath of Upper Montclair, N.J. (tied 76th, 87-84--171) and senior Steve O'Brien of Cranston, R.I. (85th, 91-88--179).
For Providence, it marked the final match ever for the squad, which earned varsity status in 1960. In 1998, it was announced that College was eliminating men's golf as a varsity sport. The team was allowed to keep its varsity status and compete until May of 2002. PC Head Coach Joe Prisco, a 1949 graduate of Providence College, has been coaching the squad since 1953. For the first seven years, Prisco coached the team when it was a club sport at Providence. In 42 years as a head coach for the Friars, Prisco has registered a 403-119-1 mark, led eight teams and 16 individuals to the NCAA Championship and captured two BIG EAST titles. During his career, Prisco was named Division I Coach of the Year eight times.
