PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Syracuse, 80-70, in BIG EAST Conference action, on Saturday, February 9, in Providence, Rhode Island. The win marked the second-straight victory for the Friars, who improve to 10-12 overall, and 4-7 in the BIG EAST. The Orangewomen, who defeated the Friars earlier this season, 81-52, on January 12 (Syracuse, N.Y.), fall to 14-8 overall, and 7-4 in BIG EAST play.

Graduate student Dani Trippany (Massena, N.Y.) led the Friars in scoring with 17 points, and added eight rebounds, three assists and a game-high five blocks. Freshman Jessica Simmonds (South Orange, N.J.) recorded her second-consecutive double-double, with 12 points and a game and career-high 13 rebounds. Sophomore Kristin Quinn (Sewell, N.J.) netted 11 points, and registered a game-high five assists.

Senior Chrissy Vozab (Amenia, N.Y.) added 14 points, four assists and two steals. With 18:25 on the clock in the second half, Vozab moved into ninth-place all-time on the Providence career assist list, with her second assist of the day. Currently, Vozab has 327 assists in her career. Mary Ann McCoy '80, who finished her PC career with 324 assists, held ninth place prior to Saturday's game.

For Syracuse, guard Julie McBride led all scorers with 19 points. McBride also posted a game-high six steals, and team-high four assists. Jazmine Wright scored 13 points and added a team-high six rebounds, followed by Chineze Nwagbo's 12 points and team-high six boards. Jaime James rounded out the Orangewomen in double figures, with 10 points.

The Friars led, 40-39, at halftime and held the largest lead of the game for either team (14 points) at the 7:57 mark of the first half, when PC led 32-18. The Orangewomen went on a 21-8 run in the remaining 7:57 to close out the half. Syracuse took a one-point lead (33-32) with 4:23 remaining in the first half, but fell behind again until the 3:00 minute mark, when the 'Cuse regained a one-point advantage (36-35).

In the second half, Providence started off on a 5-0 run to extend it's lead to 45-39 (18:25). The Orangewomen, with the help of their defense took control and their largest lead of the game (5 points) at the 8:09 mark, on a 20-10 scoring spree. The Friars regained the lead for good, with 6:28 remaining in the game, and finished the contest on a 19-11 run to make the final, 80-70.

Providence will host Virginia Tech on Wedesday, February 13 at 7:00 p.m., at Alumni Hall, in Providence, Rhode Island.
