PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team defeated #21/22 Virginia Tech, 67-61, in BIG EAST Conference action, Wednesday night at Alumni Hall in Providence, Rhode Island. The win marks the third-straight victory for the Friars, who improve to 11-12 overall, and 5-7 in the BIG EAST. The Friars also matched their season-win total from last year (2000-01), with their 11th victory of the season.

Senior guard Chrissy Vozab (Amenia, N.Y.) led the Friars with 13 points, and added two assists and one steal. Graduate student Dani Trippany (Massena, N.Y.) posted 12 points and tied teammate Jessica Simmonds (South Orange, N.J.), with a team-high six rebounds. Freshman guard Keisha Blackwell (Baltimore, Md.) dished out a team-high five assists in the victory. Providence Head Coach Jim Jabir earned his first win over a ranked opponent in his six-year tenure with the Friars.

Virginia Tech's Erin Gibson led all scorers with 15 points, and added a game-high 10 rebounds. Nicole Jones and Ieva Kublina each added 12 points for the Hokies, who fall to 16-7 overall, and 7-5 in the BIG EAST. Lisa Guarneri added nine points and a game-high six assists in the effort.

In a game that showcased six ties and five lead changes, Providence earned it's largest lead of the game at the 17:43 mark of the second half. Virginia Tech led by as many as four points in the first half of play, with 14:15 on the clock. The Hokies held their last lead of the game, 54-53, with 7:08 remaining, but the Friars went on a 14-6 run to close out the game and earn the victory. Providence nailed eight-of-eight free-throws down the stretch, in the final 4:08 of the game.

The Friars will travel to West Virginia to take on the Mountaineers in BIG EAST Conference action on Saturday, February 16. The games is scheduled to tip-off at 12:00 p.m. (noon).
