Dermot Galvin And Katie Willett Named 2001-02 BIG EAST/Aeropostale Scholar-Athlete Award Winners

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College seniors Katie Willett (Biddeford, Maine) and Dermot Galvin (Kilrush, Ireland) have been chosen as BIG EAST/Aeropostale Scholar-Athlete Award winners for 2001-02. The BIG EAST Conference made the announcement, Tuesday, February 12, 2002, in Providence, Rhode Island. Willett and Galvin each will receive $2,000 to be used toward education at the graduate level.

Willett recently completed a stellar four-year career with the PC field hockey team, as the Friars' center back. As a senior, Willett recorded personal single-season highs in goals (two), assists (three) and points scored (seven). She finishes her career as a Friar, with 10 points on three goals and four assists. Willett has twice been named to the All-BIG EAST Conference Second Team, and made her first appearance on the All-BIG EAST First Team in 2001. She also earned STX/NFHCA Division I Northeast First-Team Regional All-America honors in 2001. In 1998, Willett was selected as a member of the All-BIG EAST Rookie Team. Her success in the classroom is evident by her three-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star honors, her two-time NFHCA Division I Academic Squad membership, and 1999-00 GTE Academic All-District Fall/Winter At-Large Second-Team selection. Willett, a native of Biddeford, Maine, currently holds a 3.88 grade-point average as a marketing major. She is the daughter of Kathleen and Michael Willett.

Galvin is in the midst of his final season with the Providence College cross country, indoor and outdoor track teams. He is a captain of both the cross country and indoor track teams in 2001-02. Athletically, Galvin earned All-America honors in cross country as a junior (2000), and is a two-time All-BIG EAST and All-New England selection. Galvin has been a dominant force in the BIG EAST Conference in both indoor and outdoor track, garnering All-BIG EAST accolades in the 5,000-meter run three times (twice - outdoor, once - indoor). He also has earned All-IC4A honors during the outdoor season, in the 10,000-meter run. Galvin, a native of Kilrush, Ireland, is finishing his degree as a finance major. He is the son of Michael and Jacinta Galvin.
