The Providence College men's basketball team was defeated by in-state rival Rhode Island, 73-71, on Saturday, December 7 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I. The Friars' Sheiku Kabba (Bronx, N.Y.) took a shot with 2.1 seconds remaining in the game that hit the rim and bounced out to give the Rams their first victory over the Friars since December 9, 1997. With the loss, the Friars fell to 63-50 all-time against Rhode Island.

The Friars jumped out to a 15-2 lead just 4:16 into the game before the Rams climbed back to get within four points, 39-35, at halftime.

The second half of the game featured 13 lead changes. Rhode Island took a seven-point lead (67-60) with 5:27 remaining. However, freshman Donnie McGrath (Katonah, N.Y.) hit a three-point basket with 1:44 left in the game to force a 71-71 tie. URI took a two-point lead on a layup by Brian Woodward with 1:16 showing on the clock. Providence had two opportunities to tie the game but could not get a basket in the final 1:16.

Friar sophomore Ryan Gomes (Waterbury, Conn.) had a very strong game for the Friars as he scored 24 points, grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds and recorded four blocks. McGrath also was impressive for the Friars as he scored a career-high 15 points and was 5-9 from three-point territory. Sophomore Tuukka Kotti (Forssa, Finland) and junior Maris Laksa (Ventspils, Latvia) each added 13 points.
