No. 8 Women's Ice Hockey Defeats Maine, 3-0

The No. 8 Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated the University of Maine, 3-0, on Saturday, November 9 at Alfond Arena.

Providence quickly established control of the game in the first period. The Friars outshot the Black Bears, 20-4, and scored on the power play. Sophomore Ashley Payton (Chesterfield, Mo.) scored the Friars goal at the 11:49 mark of the first period when she picked up a rebound from a scrum in front of the net and beat goalie Lara Smart through the five-hole. The assists on the goal went to sophomore Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) and freshman Gretchen Gottwald (Stoneham, Mass.). For Gottwald, it was her first career point. In the second period, the Friars continued to carry the play as they scored twice. The first goal of the period was scored by senior Jenn Butsch (Berlin, Vt.) at the 6:59 mark of the period. Butsch received a long pass from sophomore Danielle Bourgette (Anaheim, Calif.) that sprung her behind the defense. As Butsch attempted the shot, she was pulled down from behind but managed to get a shot away from her stomach that went through the the legs of goalie Lara Smart. The second goal of the period was scored at the 8:12 mark when Zimmerman skated off the right wall, received a pass from Payton, and fired a slapshot from the left circle that beat the Maine goaltender glove-side.

Providence outshot Maine, 37-11, while freshman goaltender Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) made 34 saves for the shutout. Bugden improved her record to 3-2-1 on the year and helped the Friars move to 3-3-1 for the season. Friar players were awarded all three stars of the game. Jana Bugden was named the third star, Rush Zimmerman got the second star and Ashley Payton received the first star of the game.

No. 8 Providence College returns to action on Sunday, November 10 when they play the second game of its weekend series with the University of Maine at Alfond Arena at 1:00 p.m..
