The Providence College women's soccer team defeated Syracuse University, 2-0, on Friday, October 4 in Providence, R.I.
The Friars, who have never beaten the Orangewomen got on the board in the 41st minute when sophomore Veronica Bakke (Alesund, Norway) scored on a pass from freshman Kerry O'Malley (Longmeadow, Mass.). The second goal of the game came in the 90th minute when senior Kyle McAuley (Trumbull, Conn.) received a pass from O'Malley and put the ball past Syracuse goalkeeper Emily Kowlaczyk. The tallies gave Bakke and McAuley two and three goals on the year respectively. O'Malley ended the day with two assists which gave her seven points on the year.
Providence outshot Syracuse, 11-8 and carried the play for most of the game. Junior goalkeeper Caroline Haines (Stillwater, Minn.) was not tested often but made a big save to earn her third shutout of the season.
With the win Providence improved to 5-4-2, while Syracuse fell to 2-6-2 on the season. Providence's next match is on Sunday, October 6 at 1:00 p.m. against New Hampshire at Provindence's Glay Field.
