PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - John Linehan had a Big East and school record 11 steals and Rob Sanders had 15 points on 6-for-6 field goal shooting Tuesday night to lead Providence to a 70-55 victory over Rutgers.

Linehan broke the previous conference record of 10 set by Georgetown's Allen Iverson against Miami on Jan. 13, 1996. The former school record of 10 was set by God Shammgod in a non-conference game against Brown on Dec. 21, 1996.

Maris Laksa, Marcus Douthit and Ryan Gomes had 12 and Abdul Mills added 10 for the Friars.

Jerome Coleman led the Scarlet Knights with 13 points and Rashod Kent had 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Providence (11-9, 2-4) took control early, building a 34-19 lead on a layup by Mills with 3:39 to play in the first half. The Friars forced 14 turnovers and Linehan had eight steals in the first half as Providence took a 34-23 halftime lead.

Providence pulled ahead by as many as 22 (59-37) with 8:47 to play on a fast break layup by Douthit.

Providence shot 1-for-15 on 3-pointers but made up for it by dominating in the paint and outscoring the Knights on the break, 14-0.

Rutgers (11-7, 2-4) shot 32 percent for the game and had 26 turnovers.

Linehan is now second in career steals for Providence with 329 and has a chance to pass former Friar Eric Murdoch, who had an NCAA record 376 from 1987 to 1991.
