VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) - Ricky Wright scored 18 points and Villanova went on a 21-3 run at the start of the second half and coasted to a 76-57 victory over Providence as each team opened its Big East season Wednesday night.

Wright, who leads the country in shooting accuracy, connected on seven of nine shots and grabbed 13 rebounds as Villanova (8-2) won its fifth straight game.

Ryan Gomes had 13 points and John Linehan had 12 for Providence (9-5).

The Wildcats scored the first 11 points of the second half to take a 47-35 lead, and after Linehan hit a three-pointer, Villanova scored the next 10 points, all on layups, for a 57-38 advantage. Providence never got closer than 15 points after that.

The first half saw eight lead changes, with Villanova taking the biggest advantage, 29-23, on two driving lay-ups by Gary Buchanan. A follow-up basket by Gomes at the buzzer brought Providence to 36-35 at the half.

Villanova connected on 26 of 44 shots in the game, or 59 percent, while Providence was 20 for 59 for 33.9 percent and hit only seven of 31 from three-point range. Villanova also outrebounded Providence 39-23.

Providence is now 4-20 in its Big East opening games.
