PROVIDENCE, R.I - John Linehan scored 20 points and added nine assists as Providence beat St. John's on Saturday, 78-57.

Providence started the game with a Maris Laksa 3-pointer and shot well the entire game, hitting 50 percent (24-of-48), including 10 3-pointers.

Abdul Mills added 15 points as Providence (10-7, 1-2 Big East) snapped a three-game losing streak. Laksa had 11 points.

Marcus Hatten led St. John's (11-4, 2-2) with 21 points. The Red Storm had won two straight and seven of their last eight coming into the game.

Providence took a 12 point lead late in the first half when Mills put in a Laksa miss and Kareem Haylet hit a fast break layup off a St. John's turnover to give the Friars a 32-20 lead.

St. John's closed to 32-25 on a 3-pointer by Willie Shaw with about a minute left, but Linehan, who scored 11 points in the half, hit a 3-pointer to put the Friars back up by 10. The Friars led 37-25 at the half on 59 percent shooting (13-of-22).

St. John's never got closer than 10 in the second half, in part because of poor shooting. St. John's shot 33 percent for the game, including 4 of 21 on 3-pointers.
