PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College junior guard John Linehan (Chester, Pa.) was named All-BIG EAST Second Team on Monday, March 5. Linehan is the first Friar to earn All-BIG EAST honors since Jamel Thomas was named to the First Team in 1999.
Linehan led the BIG EAST in steals this season with 53 in 16 conference games (3.31). He leads the league in steals in overall action, averaging 3.25 thefts per game (78 steals in 24 games). Linehan ranks second all-time in steals at Providence with 243 in 89 games (2.73). He is third on the team in scoring this season, averaging 11.1 points per game.
Linehan has been an integral part of the Friars' success this season. With Linehan in the lineup, the Friars have posted an impressive 19-5 record. Linehan missed five games this season with a hamstring injury which he suffered in the first game. The Friars posted a 2-3 record without Linehan.
Linehan, who concluded his high school career at the Winchendon School, is the son of Elizabeth Linehan and Mike Shaw.
The Friars, 21-8, return to action in the Quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Tournament on Thursday, March 8 at Madison Square Garden in New York.
