PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Syracuse University, 79-74, in BIG EAST Conference women's basketball action from PC's Alumni Hall on Tuesday evening.
The Friars (10-16 overall and 4-12 in BIG EAST) moved into 11th place in the league and advance to the conference tournament with their win and Pittsburgh and West Virginia's losses. PC will face Seton Hall on Saturday, March 3rd at 8:00 p.m. at the University of Connecticut's Gampel Pavilion.
The Friars used seven-for-15 shooting from beyond the three-point circle in the first half to go into the locker room in a 41-41 tie with the Orangewomen. Junior guard Chrissy Vozab (Amenia, N.Y.) hit four-of-five three-point attempts for 12 points and her freshman backcourt mate, Kristin Quinn (Sewell, N.J.) hit four-of-five field goals, was two-for-two from behind the three-point arc and was five-for-five at the free throw line for 15 first-half points.
In the second half, Syracuse (12-14 overall/6-10 BIG EAST) led by as many as seven points, 53-46, with 15:44 to play in the contest. The Friars cut the SU lead to one, 56-55, with 11:44 remaining when freshman Jenese Wilcox (Port Chester, N.Y.) scored on a put-back. Providence grabbed the lead for good with 4:25 remaining on a Quinn three-pointer. Senior Jen Gombotz (Southington, Conn.) put the Friars up by four points with 2:24 remaining when she hit a jump shot and converted one of two free throws seconds later.
A six-foot jumper as the shot clock wound under five seconds by sophomore forward Steffanie Shoop (Somerville, N.J.) put the Friars up by six with 1:31 remaining. After a Syracuse bucket, Gombotz hit one-of-two free throws and then closed out the final margin with a fast-break layup with 10 seconds.
Quinn finished the contest with a game- and career-high 23 points. She added three assists and four steals in 35 minutes of action. Vozab was the second Friar starter to score in double figures, as she scored 16 points on four three-pointers and added four rebounds and two assists in a complete-game, 40-minute effort.
The remaining three starters also reached double figure points as senior Monika Roberts (Pittsburg, Calif.), who scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her team-best fifth double-double of the year. Gombotz added 10 points and five assists and Wilcox chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds.
