BOSTON, MASS. -- The Providence College women's hockey team defeated Northeastern, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at BU's Matthews Arena.
The Friars (17-9-3 overall and 9-7-3 ECAC) got on the scoreboard in the first period when sophomore Danielle Culgin (Branford, Conn.) notched her seventh goal of the season on an assists from junior Jackie Tamsin (Branford, Conn.).
Northeastern tied the contest 1:18 into the second period when Kathleen Savino scored her ninth goal of the year from Jessica Ferwerds and Brooke Whitney.
The Friars regained the lead on freshman Meredith Roth's (Dubuque, Iowa) seven goal. She connected on assists from senior Holly Tyng (East Orleans, Mass.) and Tamsin.
Northeastern tied the contest and then added their third goal of the second period to take a 3-2 lead over Providence. The Huskies got a power-play goal from Kim Greene at 18:38 and then an even-strength goal from Whitney at 19:59.
The Friars got even in the final period as sophomore Melanie Ruzzi (Burnsville, Minn.) notched her first goal of the season at 1:13 to even the contest at 3-3. PC got the game-winning goal with just :34 remaining in the contest when freshman Darlene Stepherson (Virden, Manitoba) scored her 13th goal of the year.
Providence goalie Amy Quinlan (Baton Rouge, La.) recorded 28 saves in the victory.
The Friars return to action on Sunday, February 18 when they host Northeastern at PC's Schneider Arena. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
