PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team rebounded from a 6-3 loss to St. Lawrence yesterday to beat Cornell 4-1 at Schneider Arena this afternoon (Sunday, February 11, 2001).
Darlene Stephenson scored her 12th goal of the season just over 12 minutes into the first period to give the Friars the early 1-0 lead. Meredith Roth tallied PC's second goal of the game less than a minute later to give Providence a 2-0 lead going into the second period.
Sarah Youlen notched a Friar goal at the 1:33 mark of the second period to stretch the lead to 3-0, before Cornell was able to get on the scoreboard. Jackie Tamsin and Danielle Culgin were credited with the double assist. Jenel Bode scored what proved to be the only Big Red goal at 4:22 in the second period off assists from Danielle Bilodeau and Brooke Bestwick.
Senior Jessica Tabb, a 2001 Patty Kazmaier Award candidate, scored her team-leading sixteenth goal of the season to close out the scoring and assure the Friars the 4-1 win. Tabb's goal was assisted by Christa Talbot and Holley Tyng.
In goal, Amy Quinlan raises her record to 7-8-1, making 24 saves in 60 minutes of work for Providence. Sanya Sandahl played all 60 minutes for the Big Red, making 15 saves.
Providence (16-9-3, 8-7-3 ECAC) will travel to Northeastern on Saturday, Feb. 17, and will return home to host Northeastern the following day. Both games are slated to begin at 2:00 p.m. Cornell falls to 9-13-1 overall and 6-11-1 in ECAC action.
