PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College freshman forward Ryan Gomes (Waterbury, Conn.) was named BIG EAST Men's Basketball Co-Rookie of the Week on Monday, December 31. Gomes shares the honor with Chris Thomas of Notre Dame. Gomes is the first Friar to earn the honor since Marcus Douthit received the accolade on December 26, 2000.
Gomes was named Co-Rookie of the Week after leading the Friars to two wins last week with his impressive play. Gomes averaged 15.0 points and seven rebounds in Providence's two wins. The 6-7 forward scored a game and career-high 21 points and registered six rebounds in PC's 94-63 win against Central Connecticut on December 30 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I. On December 27, he scored nine points and grabbed eight rebounds in PC's 91-47 win against Morgan State at Providence. Gomes is averaging 13.8 points and 7.3 rebounds per game this season.
Gomes, who played for three seasons at Wilby High School, is the son of Teresa Gomes and John Brooks.
The Friars, 9-4, return to action against Villanova University on Wednesday, January 2 at Villanova at 7:00 p.m.
