Women's Basketball Holds On To Beat Alabama, 78-75

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Alabama, 78-75, on Sunday, December 2, at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I.

Senior guard Chrissy Vozab (Amenia, N.Y.) led four Friars in double figures, with a season-high 21 points and career-high seven steals. Vozab connected on five-of-12 attempts from the field, including four-of-nine from beyond the three-point arc. She also made good on seven of her eight attempts from the foul line. Freshman Jessica Simmonds (South Orange, N.J.) scored 12 points and recorded a career and game-high nine rebounds for PC. Sophomores Kristin Quinn (Sewell, N.J.) and Jenese Wilcox (Port Chester, N.Y.) added 11 points each.

Alabama was led by Shondra Johnson, who scored a game-high 25 points, on four-of-nine shooting from the field, and 16-of-18 shooting from the free-throw line. Center LaNisha Cartwell scored 13 points, and Beth Vice registered 11 points.

The Friars led, 42-27, at the halftime break, as the team shot 43.3% (13-30) from the floor. Alabama shot just 20.0% (6-30) from the floor in the first half.

Providence led by as many as 18 points, with 11:07 (59-41) left in the game, before the Crimson Tide went on a 34-18 run to tie the game, 75-75, with 1:11 on the clock. Quinn, the Friars' second-year point guard, knocked down two-free throws with 1:09 remaining to put PC up by two points, 77-75. Alabama took possession of the ball, and Vozab recorded one of her seven steals on the day, with 54 seconds remaining. Vozab pushed the ball up the court to Quinn, who missed the layup, and Alabama regained possession with 27 seconds left. After a timeout, Alabama ran the clock down to eight seconds, before PC's junior guard Brooke Freeburg (Waterford, Pa.) picked off a Crimson Tide pass. Freeburg was immediately fouled, and finished off the Tide, making one of her two free-throw attempts to win the game, 78-75.

Providence improves its record to 5-2 overall, while the Tide drop just their second game of the season, and stand at 4-2. The Friars will travel to Piscataway, N.J., on Wednesday, December 5, to take on BIG EAST Conference foe, Rutgers University. The game marks the first BIG EAST game of the 2001-02 season for the Friars, and is scheduled to begin at 7:30.
