LAS VEGAS (AP) - Abdul Mills scored a career high 27 points, leading Providence past UTEP 69-60 in the third-place game of the Las Vegas tournament Wednesday night.
Teammate Maris Laksa added 12 points while John Linehan had 10 and eight assists for the Friars (3-1).
Brian Stewart led UTEP (2-2) with 23 points, including a 7-for-7 performance from the free-throw line. Miners teammate Nick Enzweiler had 10 points.
Providence led for almost all of the game, taking the lead for good with 10:07 left in the first half with a Garrett Thompson dunk that put the Friars ahead 18-17 and sparked a 15-4 Friars run.
After leading 36-28 at halftime, Providence began to pull away and was ahead 61-44 with 8:29 left in the game. A UTEP rally cut the lead to 61-52 with 5:32 remaining, but Providence refused to fold in the final minutes.
