PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Abdul Mills scored 18 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds Friday night as Providence rode a sticky defense to beat Siena 79-54.
Marcus Douthit and Christopher Anrin, who was cleared Friday to play by the NCAA after being investigated for playing professionally in Europe, both scored 16 points for the Friars (1-0).
Providence played without two starters, Maris Laksa, penalized for two games by the NCAA for playing professionally in Europe, and Romuald Augustin, sidelined with a hip injury.
Mark Price led the Saints (0-1) with 17 points.
The Friars used a combination of Douthit's inside play and a full-court trap for a 12-3 spurt that made it 61-41 with 8:42 to play. The run took place with point guard and last year's Big East defensive player of the year, John Linehan, on the bench after picking up his fourth foul with 11:00 left.
Linehan, who averaged 10.7 points last year, had just three points in 14 minutes.
Providence shot 37.9 percent, and Siena shot 36.7 percent, but the Friars had 17 more field goal attempts, keyed largely by Siena's 25 turnovers.
Price kept the Saints in the game in the first half with 12 of Siena's final 14 points as the half ended with Providence on top 35-29.
