FRIARS WOMEN'S HOCKEY DEFEATS BOSTON COLLEGE, 4-3

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -- The Providence College women's hockey team defeated Boston College, 4-3, on Tuesday, January 8th in the consolation game of the Lake Placid Tournament.

The Friars (12-3-2 overall) scored three goals in the third period to overcome a 2-1 deficit entering the final period of play. PC got goals from junior Jennifer Kranz (Waukesha, Wisc.), Meredith Roth (Dubuque, Iowa) and Kim Mathias (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) in the third period for the victory.

The Friars got on the scoreboard first in the contest when senior Jessica Tabb (Holland, Mass.) scored at 16:44 on assists from Mathias and senior Valerie Bono (Woburn, Mass.).

The Eagles (3-14-0) then responded with a goal from Kelly McManus at 17:52 to tie the score in the first period and took the lead in the second period when McManus notched her second goal at 19:21.

PC tied the contest at 2-2 in the third period when Kranz scored 2:04 into the period on assists from Erin Cannon (Potsdam, N.Y.) and Danielle Culgin (Framingham, Mass.). Boston College reclaimed the lead 30 second later when Missy Rarsz converted to put the Eagles up, 3-2.

The Friars scored the game-tying goal when Roth converted passes from Mathias and senior Jessica Tabb (East Orleans, Mass.). Providence's game-winning goal was scored by Mathias at 12:36 with assists from junior Jenn Butsch (Berlin, Vt.) and freshman Darlene Stephenson (Yirden, Manitoba).

Friars junior goalie Crystal Nicholas (Tulsa, Okla.) recorded 16 saves in the victory for PC while Boston College goalie Sharon Van Tuyl recorded 46 saves in the loss.

Providence returns to action on Friday, January 12 at Brown University in the Mayor's Cup game.
