DURHAM, N.H. - Michelle Thornton netted two goals and set up another to propel the ninth-ranked University of New Hampshire women's hockey team to Saturday night's 6-2 ECAC victory against 10th-ranked Providence College at the Whittemore Center.

It took just 15 seconds for the Wildcats, who improved to 14-8-0 overall and 10-5-0 in the conference, to take a 1-0 lead as Kristine Butt scored on a centering pass from Janine Goulet. The 'Cats quickly built a two-goal advantage on a Nicole Stefanilo tally at 2:13. Goulet and Butt earned assists on the play.

The visitors called time out and responded with a Kim Mathias goal at 2:48. UNH regained a two-goal cushion, 3-1, at 12:03 when Thornton redirected Marybeth Marren's (Alton, N.H.) slapshot from the right point.

In the second period, the Friars (12-7-2, 7-6-2) closed within 3-2 with a Jenn Butsch power-play goal at 8:03. The Wildcats answered with a power-play goal at 19:09 when Kira Misikowetz scored from the right circle.

New Hampshire pulled away in the third period with a Deborah Bernhard goal at 7:45 and Thornton's second tally of the night at 10:18. Jenn Wildman assisted on both goals.

UNH's Jen Huggon finished with 15 saves. Her counterpart, Amy Quinlan, stopped 22 shots.
