DURHAM, N.H. - Michelle Thornton netted two goals and set up another to propel the ninth-ranked University of New Hampshire women's hockey team to Saturday night's 6-2 ECAC victory against 10th-ranked Providence College at the Whittemore Center.
It took just 15 seconds for the Wildcats, who improved to 14-8-0 overall and 10-5-0 in the conference, to take a 1-0 lead as Kristine Butt scored on a centering pass from Janine Goulet. The 'Cats quickly built a two-goal advantage on a Nicole Stefanilo tally at 2:13. Goulet and Butt earned assists on the play.
The visitors called time out and responded with a Kim Mathias goal at 2:48. UNH regained a two-goal cushion, 3-1, at 12:03 when Thornton redirected Marybeth Marren's (Alton, N.H.) slapshot from the right point.
In the second period, the Friars (12-7-2, 7-6-2) closed within 3-2 with a Jenn Butsch power-play goal at 8:03. The Wildcats answered with a power-play goal at 19:09 when Kira Misikowetz scored from the right circle.
New Hampshire pulled away in the third period with a Deborah Bernhard goal at 7:45 and Thornton's second tally of the night at 10:18. Jenn Wildman assisted on both goals.
UNH's Jen Huggon finished with 15 saves. Her counterpart, Amy Quinlan, stopped 22 shots.
Providence will return to action on January 21 at Maine at 2:00 p.m.
