ORONO, Me. - Jenn Butsch, Kim Mathias and Darlene Stephenson each scored one goal to preserve a 3-3 tie against Maine on Sunday afternoon.
The Black Bears took an early 2-0 lead in the first period as Meagan Aarts and Esther Granville notched one goal each. Providence got on the board at the 15:58 mark of the first period as Butsch fired a shot from point blank range off an assist from Valerie Bono. Both teams were shutout in the second period before Mathias scored 13 seconds into the third period, tying the score at 2-2. Stephenson put Providence ahead 3-2 less than five minutes later off of a assist from Jessica Tabb.
With 11 seconds remaining in the game, Maine converted a penalty shot as a result of player misconduct penalty and knotted the score at 3-3, pushing the game into overtime.
Brigid Keady played all 65 minutes in goal making 18 saves, including three in the overtime period. Dawn Froats registered 29 saves for the Black Bears.
Providence (12-7-3, 7-6-3) will face Mercyhurst at home in Schneider Arena on both Saturday and Sunday at 7:00 p.m.
