PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Providence College women's basketball team was defeated by the University of Pittsburgh, 68-53, in a BIG EAST Conference women's basketball game Tuesday, January 2nd at Pitt's Fitzgerald Field House. The loss snapped back-to-back victories by Providence and dropped the Friars to 6-5 overall and 0-2 in the BIG EAST.
The Friars fell behind the Panthers (7-6 overall/1-1 BIG EAST) early in the first half, as Pitt lead, 7-0 before PC freshman Kristin Quinn (Sewell, N.J.) got the Friars on the board with a three at 16:58. Pitt kept the offence coming, though, as the Panthers then scored the next nine points to open a 16-3 lead with 15 minutes remaining in the half.
Pittsburgh increased its lead to as much as 19 points at 39-20 with 1:37 remaining in the half, but baskets by freshman Jenese Wilcox (Port Chester, N.Y.) and senior Monika Roberts (Pittsburg, Calif.) and a pair of free throws by junior Catrina Hawley-Stewart (West Haven, Conn.) cut the Panthers lead to 15 points at the break, 41-26.
The two teams played even in the second half, as each team scored 27 points, as Providence could not get any closer than 12 points. PC senior Jen Gombotz (Southington, Conn.) drilled a three-pointer from the far corner with 15:22 remaining to cut Pitt's lead to 47-35, but that was as close as the Friars could get.
Providence was led by Gombotz with 11 points. She was the only PC player to score in double figures. Roberts added seven points, all in the first half, and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
Pittsburgh was led by freshman Ssheila Stufflet, who scored a career-high 15 points.
The Friars managed just 30% shooting from the floor, hitting 17-of-56 shots. PC hit five-of-17 (0.294) shots from three-point range and was 14-of-19 (0.737) from the charity stripe.
The Panthers were 24-of-53 (0.453) overall from the field, hit just four-of-eight threes and connected on 16-of-19 (0.842) free throw attempts.
The Friars return to Providence to play their next contest against Rutgers University on Wednesday, January 10th. Game time is 7:00 p.m. from Providence's Alumni Hall.
