ORONO, Maine -- The Providence College women's soccer team defeated Iona College, 4-0, at the Black Bear Invitational on Sunday, August 27. The win marked the first time the Friars have opened a season with two victories since 1992 when the squad defeated Colgate and New Hampshire.
Junior forward Caitlyn Welsh got the Friars on the board at the 19:42 mark when she scored what proved to be the game-winning goal. Welsh took a pass from senior midfielder Jill Flanagan (Yorktown Hts., N.Y.) and beat Iona goalkeeper Mary O'Rourke (Northport, N.Y.) from 18 yards out. PC forward Kyle McAuley (Trumbull, Conn.) added her first two goals of the season at 34:06 and 83:52. Sophomore forward Marianna McDonald (Littleton, Colo.) scored at 64:25 when she tucked the ball under the cross bar to give PC a 3-0 advantage.
In goal, Iona's Ronale McKenzie (Medford, N.Y.) and O'Rourke combined to stop six shots. PC freshman goalkeeper Caroline Haines (Stillwater, Minn.) earned her second straight shutout as she turned away four Gael shots.
With the win, PC's record moved to 2-0 on the season while the Gaels fell to 0-2.
The Friars return to action on Wednesday, August 30, when they host Connecticut in the home opener at 3:00 p.m. at Glay Field.
