PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence and Villanova meet for the second time this season and the 79th time in the all-time series. The Wildcats took a 66-57 decision over the Friars on January 20th at the Providence Civic Center. The Villanova win snapped PC's three-game winning streak versus the Wildcats. The Friars have won three of the last four and four of the last six meetings versus Villanova. At Villanova, the Friars are just 9-21, but won last year's visit by a 90-84 score in overtime. In BIG EAST regular season play, Villanova has a 22-15 edge over the Friars.

LOW SCORING AFFAIR...Boston College and Providence combined to set a BIG EAST record for the lowest scoring game in league history on February 26th. PC's 45-40 verdict was fewer points than the previous mark of 45-42 which was set by St. John's and Miami on January 14th, 1992.

REBOUNDING MACHINE...PC's junior forward continued his impressive junior season by grabbing 21 rebounds in the Friars' win over Boston College on February 26th. The 21 rebounds is a career high for Maxey and the most by a Friar or anyone in the BIG EAST since former Friar Michael Smith grabbed a league record 26 rebounds versus Syracuse on January 24, 1994. Maxey also scored 16 points for his seventh double-double of the season and had career highs in blocked shots (5) and steals (4) in the game. The Lake Elsinore, California native has now scored in double figures in 12 straight games and in 24 of PC's 27 contests this season. He leads the team in scoring with 15.4 points per game and rebounding with 8.3 boards per game.

DONTA'S INFERNO...Junior guard Donta Wade was chosen as the BIG EAST's Co-Player of the Week as he helped PC to wins over Notre Dame (89-79) and Boston College (45-40) last week. Wade averaged 25.5 points in the two games with 5.5 rebounds. At Notre Dame on February 23rd, Wade scored a BIG EAST season high 38 points and set BIG EAST records for three-pointers (10) and three-point attempts (17). He also grabbed five rebounds. On Saturday, February 26th, Wade scored 13 points including two threes in the final four minutes to pull out the win. The Huntington, West Virginia native also had a career best six rebounds on the afternoon. He is the first Friar to win a BIG EAST honor this year.

A WIN IS A WIN ...It wasn't pretty, but it was a win as the Friars downed Boston College, 45-40, on February 26th. The win was PC's third in a row and the second time in the three-game streak that the Friars had limited their opponent to less than 50 points (Miami 47-45) in a game. PC held BC to a season low 25.8% shooting from the floor (16-62) and outrebounded the Eagles with a season high 50 boards to 41 on the game. Erron Maxey led the Friars with 16 points and 21 rebounds. Donta Wade added 13 points and six rebounds in the victory.

The last triple-double recorded by a Friar was done by Bob Misevicius on January 11, 1977 versus Connecticut when he had 14 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists in an 86-71 win. Shabazz becomes just one of four players at PC ever to record ten blocks in a game and the first since Bob Cooper had ten versus Michigan on December 29, 1976. The record is 12 by Marvin Barnes who had three games with ten or more and James Hadnot had 10 in the 1960 NIT versus St. Louis.

TRIPLE THE FUN...Since 1960, the record books show that Providence College has recorded six triple-doubles. Here's the list:

Karim Shabazz - Dec. 27, 1999 vs. Long Island25 pts./15 rebs./10 blocks). PC won 79-63.
Bob Misevicius - Jan. 11, 1977 vs. Connecticut(14 pts./13 rebs./10 asts). PC won 86-71.

There have been just nine triple doubles in the 21 seasons of the BIG EAST. The last was done by St. John's Ron Artest (13 pts./12 rebs./11 asts.) versus St. John's on 1/9/99.

NAIL BITERS...The Friars saw their record improve to 3-4 in "close" games after the February 26th win versus Boston College (45-40). The win was PC's second consecutive "close" win. The Friars' other wins came versus Miami (47-45) on February 16th and in overtime against Massachusetts (12/30/99) by a 61-60 margin. PC's "close losses have come at North Carolina State (60-64), versus Central Connecticut (50-54), versus Fordham (67-71) and at Boston College (62-67). "Close" games are games decided by five or less points.

DIVISIONS IN 2000-2001... The BIG EAST Conference will divide into two conferences in men's basketball for the 2000-2001 season as the league adds Virginia Tech as its 14th member. The Friars will be in a Division with Boston College, Connecticut, Miami, St. John's, Villanova and Virginia Tech and will play each team twice. The other Division will be made up of Georgetown, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Seton Hall, Syracuse and West Virginia. PC will play four games against teams from that division each season. The Conference also announced a new tournament format for next year as only the top six teams in each division will advance to Madison Square Garden. The women will continue to play in one 14-team league, playing each team once and three teams, twice. The women will also have just 12 teams make the tournament with the first four teams getting a bye and then playing the four first round winners in the quarterfinal round.

STREAKY FRIARS...The Friars equalled a season high three-game winning streak with their 45-40 win over Boston College on February 26th. The previous three-game streak came between December 23rd and December 30th when PC downed Arkansas, Long Island and Massachusetts...PC has won two in a row on the road (at Miami and at Notre Dame)...The BC win snapped a five-game PC home losing streak.....

FOR STARTERS...Coming into tonight's game, the Friars have used 12 different starting lineups. Versus Boston College, Abdul Mills (G), Donta Wade (G), Karim Shabazz (C), Romuald Augustin (F) and Erron Maxey (F) started the sixth time as a unit. The group is 4-2 on the season. Maxey is the only Friar to start in all 27 games for Providence this season.

LIGHTS OUT...Junior guard Donta Wade had a career night at Notre Dame scoring a career high 38 points (12-23 FG, 10-17 3PT, 4-4 FT) while grabbing five rebounds and dishing out three assists. The 38 points was the most by a BIG EAST player this season and his 10-for-17 night behind the three point arc set PC and BIG EAST records for three-pointers and attempts in a game. Wade broke the PC record which was eight in one game and held by Ernie "Pop" Lewis and Delray Brooks. The BIG EAST record was nine and held by Shaheen Holloway, Ray Allen and Dana Barros. The PC record for attempts in a game was 16 by Billy Donovan. The BIG EAST record for attempts was also 16 and was held by Barros and Marius Janulis.

OUT OF ACTION...Junior guard John Linehan is back on the sidelines after re-aggravating a groin injury that has plagued him all season. Linehan's injury problems started on October 25th when he underwent surgery for a sports hernia. Following two more surgeries for a blood clot and an infection, PC's superpest missed the Friars' first five games. He returned on November 30th versus Boston University and played in four games before getting hurt against Central Connecticut. The Chester, Pa. native missed the Arkansas and Long Island games before returning against Massachusetts. He played in that game and against Fordham before going out of the lineup late in the second half. He also has a fractured bone in his left wrist that is now in a cast. He has missed the last 14 games and 21 of PC's 27 games this year . To date, Lenihan has played in six games and is averaging 5.2 ppg with 3.0 rpg, 3.5 assists and 2.8 steals per game.

FRIARS FOR THREE...The Friars hit on a season high 12 three-pointers in the victory at Notre Dame (2/23/00). That marked the third time this season that PC was in double figures for three-pointers. The other two came versus American-Puerto Rico (11) and against Boston University (10).

TWO FOR THE ROAD...PC's win over Notre Dame was the Friars' second consecutive BIG EAST road win. The win snapped Notre Dame's two game series winning streak and was the Friars' first win at Notre Dame since 2/21/96.

FREE THROW MARK...The Friars turned in a season-best effort from the charity stripe versus West Virginia on January 30th. PC sank 17-of-19 free throws for a season hight 89.5% shooting mark from the line. PC's previous best was just 80.0% (12-of-15 versus URI and 8-10 at Boston College). Erron Maxey (6-6), Jamaal Camah (4-4) and Abdul Mills (2-2) were all perfect from the line for the Friars who came into the West Virginia game shooting just 60.2% from the foul line.

50 OR LESS...PC has held opponents to 50 or less four times this season and in two or its last three games. The last time PC held four teams under 50 was during the 1981-82 season when that team did it six times.

FEWEST POINTS TO WIN...The last time the Friars scored less than 45 points in a game and won was on December 12, 1979 when PC defeated Brown, 44-42.

HIGHS AND LOWS...The 43 points scored by the Friars in the 54-43 loss to Holy Cross (11/20/99) is the fewest points the Friars have scored in a game since December 27, 1982 when they lost by an identical 54-43 score to the University of Hawaii in the Rainbow Classic. Just one week later, the Friars set the school's single game scoring mark with 120 points versus American University - Puerto Rico.

ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM...Junior forward Erron Maxey was chosen to the All-Tournament team at the Puerto Rico Shootout. In three games, Maxey scored 61 points (20.3 ppg) and had 22 rebounds (7.3 rpg). The Friars' team captain set personal bests with 12 field goals and 25 points in the win over American University.

MAXEY-MUM EFFORT....Junior forward Erron Maxey continues to be PC's Mr. Consistent this season. Versus Boston College on February 26th, Maxey led the Friars to victory with his seventh double-double of the season as he scored 16 points and grabbed 21 rebounds. He now has 12 double-doubles in his PC career.

For the year, Maxey has also recorded career highs this season for points (25 versus American-Puerto Rico) and rebounds (21 versus Boston College). Maxey has led the Friars in scoring in 17 of 27 games and in rebounding in 14 of 27 games. He leads the team in scoring with 15.4 ppg and rebounding with 8.3 boards per game. His seven double-doubles rank him fifth among BIG EAST players

Versus Boston College, Shabazz was held to just one point with four rebounds and a BIG EAST career high five blocked shots in 30 minutes of play. On January 30th at West Virginia, Shabazz turned in his fourth double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds. MR. ROGERS NEIGHBORHOOD...Junior guard Chris Rogers equalled his career best with five assists in the win at Notre Dame. He earlier dished out five versus Villanova (1/2/00). His best game of the season came at Boston College as he scored a career high 12 points off the bench. Rogers was 4-8 FG, 2-3 3PT and 2-2 from the line. At West Virginia on January 30th, Rogers played a career high 34 minutes with five points, four rebounds, one assist and three steals.

MURRAY'S BEST...Junior forward David Murray came off the bench at Seton Hall to score a career high 17 points (7-14 FG, 3-5 FT) while grabbing seven rebounds. Murray also played a career high 35 minutes in that game. Versus Rutgers, Murray scored ten points with three rebounds off the bench. He was 6-for-7 from the line. Both the makes and attempts were career bests for Murray.

MILLS(ING) AROUND...Freshman guard Abdul Mills seems to have found his early-season confidence over the past seven games. After scoring just 16 points in the previous six games, Mills has scored 58 points, grabbed 20 rebounds, dished out 21 assists and picked up 13 steals all while committing 12 turnovers. Mills had 14 points (4-9 FG, 1-1 3PT, 5-8 FT) in the win at Notre Dame on February 23rd. came off the bench at Seton Hall to score 13 points

WADE PARADE...Junior guard Donta Wade found the scoring touch with a career high 38-point game at Notre Dame on February 23rd. Wade was 12-for-23 from the field including 10-of-17 from behind the three-point arc giving him Providence College and BIG EAST records in each category. Wade's 38-point outburst came on the heels of scoring just 15 points in his previous seven games.

The Huntington, West Virginia native followed his 38 point performance with 13 points and six rebounds in the win over Boston College. Wade's 38 point night surpassed his 24-point night in PC's win over Arkansas on December 23rd. Wade was 8-for-13 from the floor (6-for-8 from three-point land) and added a pair of free throws in 24 minutes off the bench.

THE SHOT BLOCKERS...With the addition of David Murray and Karim Shabazz to the PC lineup, there has been a steady increase in blocked shots. Last season, PC recorded 65 blocks in 30 games for a 2.2 blocks per game average. This season, through the first 27 games, the Friars already have 132 blocks (4.89 per game). The last time a PC team averaged more that 4.89 blocks per game was during the 1974-75 season when that team recorded 210 blocks in 31 games (6.7 per game). Erron Maxey led the team with 19 last season. Shabazz already has 51 in 18 games while David Murray has rejected 25 and Maxey has a career high with 29 blocks this season.

BIG EAST SHOOTING..The Friars turned in their best offensive performance of the BIG EAST season at Notre Dame shooting 48.3% (29-60) from the floor. The Friars also made 12-of-22 three-pointers (54.4%) in that game. The Friars' previous BIG EAST best came at Seton Hall (27-60, 45.1%).

FOR THE RECORDS...The Friars' 120-point outburst against American University of Puerto Rico set the single game mark for points in a game. The previous mark was 118 and was set on January 20th, 1973 in a 118-88 win over Western Kentucky. PC's 50 field goals versus American also set a school mark. The previous best of 48 was done four times with the last one coming on December 18, 1976 versus Brown University.

SLAMMING THE DOOR...PC's stubborn, hardnosed defense held Boston College to a season low 40 points on February 26th. That surpassed the 45 points PC surrendered to Miami on February 16th. PC forced Boston College into as season low 25.8 (16-62) shooting. The 40 points are the fewest points a PC team has surrendered in Tim Welsh's two seasons guiding the Black and White. The last time PC held a team to less than 40 points was the 1997-98 season when PC held Brown to 33 points in a 67-33 win.

FIRST HALF MAGIC...The Friars held Georgetown to just six field goals and 15 points in the first half of the 55-48 win on January 5th. The 15 points was the second fewest ever given up by the Friars in a BIG EAST game as they held Connecticut to 15 on February 1, 1982. The fewest points a PC team has ever given up in a half is 12 and that occured versus the Crescent Athletic Club on January 1, 1927.

SECOND HALF DEFENSE...The Friars held Boston College to a season low 19 points in the second half on February 26th. Boston College shot just 22.6% (7-for-31) in the second half. The 40 points Boston College scored in the game were the fewest the Friars have given up in a this season.

BOARD PROBLEMS...PC's rebounding struggles took new highs and lows versus Villanova. The Wildcats pulled down a season high 53 boards versus the Friars. On the other hand, the Friar grabbed a season-low 27 rebounds in the loss. The Friars have won the battle of the boards in three of their last four games. For the season, the Friars have been outrebounded in 17 of the team's 27 games.

TURNOVER TIME...PC forced Villanova into a season high 29 turnovers on January 20th. Despite that, the Friars fell, 66-57. This marked the second time this season, PC has forced 29 turnovers.
