Women's Ice Hockey Defeats Vermont, 6-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated the Vermont Catamounts, 6-0, in non-conference action on Sunday, November 26 at PC's Schneider Arena. The Friars were led by freshman forward Sarah Youlen (Potsdam, N.Y.) who propelled the Friars with one goal and one assist.

The Friars got on the scoreboard first at 11:59 of the second period when Youlen notched what proved to be the game-winning goal on passes from junior forwards Jennifer Kranz (Waukesha, Wisc.) and Beth Wolff (Hibbing, Minn.).

Providence exploded for five goals in the third period as the Friars earned their seventh victory of the season. PC wasted little time in the third period before senior forward Jessica Tabb (Holland, Mass.) added an insurance goal to give the black and white a 2-0 lead. Senior forward Holley Tyng (East Orleans, Mass.) scored on a blast from the point to increase PC's lead to 3-0 at 4:53 of the third period. Friar freshman forward Darlene Stephenson (Virden, Manitoba) scored at 8:32 of the period with assists going to junior forward Kim Mathias (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) and Tabb. Kranz and freshman forward Gayle Shalloo (Scottsdale, Ariz.) each scored goals late in the third period as PC solidified the 6-0 decision.

In goal, Vermont sophomore Tiffany Hayes (New Milford, Conn.) stopped a game-high 56 shots to keep the Catamounts in much of the game. Providence junior Brigid Keady (Northfield, Ill.) tallied three saves as she posted her first shutout of the season.

Providence College returns to action on Wednesday, November 28 when Boston College travels to Schneider Arena for a 7:00 p.m. faceoff.
