Women's Ice Hockey Defeats Vermont, 9-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated the Vermont Catamounts in non-conference action on Saturday, November 25 at PC's Schneider Arena. The Friars were led by freshman forward Darlene Stephenson (Virden, Manitoba) who tallied two goals and two assists to pace the Providence attack.

The Friars got on the scoreboard first at 2:36 of the first period and did not look back. Sophomore forward Jenn Butsch (Berlin, Vt.) notched what proved to be the game-winning goal on passes from junior defenseman Christa Talbot (Lake Forest, Calif.) and senior forward Erin Cannon (Potsdam, N.Y.). PC added a goal from Stephenson to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

Providence exploded for five goals in the third period, three of which came in the sixth minute. Junior forward Kim Mathias sparked PC's first line as she scored at 5:05 and 5:19 of the period. Junior forward Jackie Tamsin (Branford, Conn.) added PC's fifth goal of the game at 5:59 with assists going to senior defenseman Val Bono (Woburn, Mass.) and sophomore forward Danielle Culgin (Framingham, Mass.).

Providence took the 9-0 decision as the black and white added two third period goals. For the game, Providence outshot the Catamounts, 51-5.

In goal, sophomore Tiffany Hayes (New Milford, Conn.) stopped 42 shots while Providence freshman netminder Amy Quinlan (Baton Rouge, La.) recorded her first career shutout.

Providence and Vermont faceoff in a rematch on Sunday, November 26 at Schneider Arena at 2:00 p.m.
