PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College Friars defeated Findlay University, 3-2, in overtime in women's ice hockey action on Saturday, October 28 at Findlay, Ohio. Providence captured its season opener by rallying from a two-goal deficit after one period to defeat the Oilers when sophomore forward Danielle Culgin (Framingham, Mass.) tallied the game winner at 3:41 of overtime.
Findlay took an early advantage by recording two goals in the final two minutes of the first period. The Oilers got on the board first when sophomore forward Nikki Work (Erie, Pa.) scored on a pass from freshman forward Andrea Coto (New Boston, Mich.) at 18:30. Less than one minute later, freshman forward Sherrie White (Neepawa, Manitoba) netted a short-handed goal at 19:07 to give Findlay a 2-0 lead as the two teams headed to the first intermission.
Providence narrowed Findlay's lead to 2-1 at 19:56 of the second period when junior forward Kim Mathias (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) scored on passes from junior defenseman Angela Hill (Pascoag, R.I.) and senior forward Jessica Tabb (Holland, Mass.). The Friars evened the game at 2-2 at 9:12 of the third period. Freshman forward Gayle Shalloo (Scottsdale, Ariz.) recorded her first career goal when the Friars converted on a power-play attempt. Shalloo was assisted by Tabb and sophomore forward Jenn Butsch (Berlin, Vt.).
Providence earned the decision when Culgin scored the game-winning goal in overtime. Culgin gave the Friars their first victory of the 2000-01 season as she beat Findlay goaltender Erin Blair (Lisle, Illinois) on an unassisted bid.
In goal, Friar junior netminder Crystal Nicholas (Tulsa, Okla.) earned her first victory with Providence by stopping 21 shots. Findlay's Blair stopped a game-high 44 shots in the loss.
Providence College will return to action on Sunday, October 29 when the meet Findlay University for the second consecutive day at 2:00 p.m.
